The 32 squads of Qatar 2022
Qatar 2022 was the first World Cup with 26-player squads, expanded from the traditional 23 to cushion a tournament played mid-season in November and December. All 32 finalists are here — from champions Argentina, with Messi making a then-record-equalling fifth appearance, to debutant hosts Qatar, who became the first host nation to lose every group game.
The field carried seven former champions — Brazil, Germany, Argentina, France, Uruguay, England and Spain all qualified, while Italy, the reigning European champion, famously did not. At the time it was widely billed as the farewell World Cup for both Messi and Ronaldo — a prediction the 2026 edition went on to disprove, but it gave every knockout round an end-of-era electricity.
